The Dean

The Very Rev Dr Graham O'Brien

Hi, I’m Graham. I joined the Cathedral in July 2021, after 6 years as a Diocesan Cathedral Canon and over 20 years of ministry in the Nelson Diocese. Since ordination in 2007 my roles have included being Vicar of the Picton Parish and Ministry Educator for the Diocese, which also included a role as Senior Lecturer at Bishopdale Theological College. I have a PhD in Cellular and Molecular Biology (Canterbury University) and a Masters degree in Theology (Laidlaw College), which I integrate with an interest in faith-science conversations and Bioethics. I am also interested in Church history, especially the English Reformation and Christianity in Aotearoa New Zealand, and what this means for Anglican identity and worship. When I have time, I enjoy running and the occasional game of golf. As an experienced bass-baritone, I have sung for a number of choirs in Nelson and Auckland as a soloist. I am married to the amazing Lee-ann and have two Border Terriers and two adult children.

Office Administrator

Rebekah Spink

Hi, I'm Rebekah. I like working in the Cathedral office because I can help people with anything they need (within my power, of course!) I’m looking forward to all the fun events we have planned. Especially the Blessing of the Animals. At home I like to play video games and watch twitch streams.

Cathedral KIDS Ministry

Gayle McVay

Hi, I'm Gayle. see www.nelsonanglican.nz/vacancies I run the Cathedral KIDS sessions on Sunday mornings in term time. I especially enjoy the challenge of simplifying biblical concepts for the children. It is an incredible rewarding time together and I'm not sure who learns more, the children or myself! I hope that all we explore in Cathedral KIDS will sit deeply within the attendees hearts and marinate throughout their lives.  We would love for you and your children to join us.
